Overview
This course is for those who require the skills and knowledge to perform fire operations as part of an Emergency Response Team, including operating portable and appliance-mounted firefighting pumps, fighting and containing fires safely, effectively, and efficiently in an emergency situation.
This course involves the use of fire hoses, branches, breathing apparatus equipment, hydrants, and Fire appliance. Due to working with live fire participants are required to be focussed at all times and comply with all instructions provided by the trainers and assessors. Candidates will be expected to carry out tasks such as deploying fully charged fire hoses weighing up to 100kg at full charge, whilst wearing level 2 firefighting kit plus structural firefighters’ helmet and breathing apparatus.
Candidates will be expected take part in hot fire scenarios wearing all the PPC identified and using all firefighting equipment in hot, smoke-filled structures and carry out firefighting and search and rescue of casualty’s weighing upwards of 50kg.
This course can be fast paced and very physical, some level of fitness is required.

- Firefighting strategies and techniques
- Appliance and equipment selection, use, maintenance and cleaning
- Pump operations and components in accordance with manufacturer specification
- Maintenance of pump and monitoring of pumping operations
- Procedures to safely respond to a fire
- Safe operational procedures on the fireground
- Avoiding fire recurrence
- Decision making and troubleshooting techniques
- Post incident record keeping and debriefing
Entry Requirements
Participants must:
- Hold and provide a current Statement of Attainment for PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit or equivalent
- Be clean shaven to ensure facial seal of respirators as per AS/NZS 1715
- Provide photo I.D on entry
- Unless exempt, provide a verifiable USI number
- Be physically fit and healthy with capacity to perform manual tasks
- Be able to read, write, communicate orally, and understand and interpret complex information and situations
- Be able to interact with others and work under pressure
- Dress appropriately i.e., long sleeve, long pants or overalls, safety boots/closed in shoes, safety glasses

Delivery method
This course is delivered over five (5) days and consists of classroom-based theory learning with practical based activities.
Assessments
Assessment includes written and/or multiple-choice knowledge assessment and practical based skills assessments.
Completion
On successful completion of all assessment requirements participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for:

- PUAFIR220 Respond to isolated structure fire
- PUAFIR309 Operate Pumps
- PUAEQU001 Prepare, Maintain and Test Response Equipment
Skills maintenance
There is no legislated expiry for this unit, industry best practice recommends refresher training every two (2) years to maintain competence and familiarity with current standards and procedures.
